The Mission of The Māori Green Lantern
The Māori Green Lantern serves as a vital watchdog in our digital landscape, analyzing news content from outlets like NZ Herald, Radio New Zealand, Stuff, Te Ao News, and Waatea News while examining social media posts for signs of misinformation and bias. This essential mahi (work) involves exposing the sophisticated tactics used by far-right groups to spread disinformation, particularly during critical periods like the COVID-19 pandemic when misinformation surged beyond previously seen levels.
The publication grounds its analysis in Māori values and spirituality, drawing from the rich tradition of kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection), which represents a way of managing our information environment based on traditional Māori worldviews. This approach recognizes that all life is connected, and that protecting our communities from harmful misinformation is part of our responsibility as kaitiaki.

Fighting Misinformation with Cultural Strength
The Māori Green Lantern addresses the surge in anti-Māori sentiment that has been documented by research organizations like The Disinformation Project. This work is particularly crucial given the rise in racist and violent imagery that has intensified threats to social cohesion in Aotearoa.
The publication's approach follows the enhanced recognition framework for identifying:
Far-Right Misinformation Tactics: Anti-co-governance campaigns, historical revisionism, economic fear-mongering, Treaty denialism, and welfare scapegoating targeting Māori communities.
Neoliberal Propaganda: Market fundamentalism, individual responsibility rhetoric that ignores structural racism, and deregulation advocacy opposing Indigenous protections.
White Supremacist Narratives: Replacement theory, reverse racism claims, and colonial apologia defending historical injustices.

A Platform for Truth and Accountability
What sets The Māori Green Lantern apart is its commitment to grounding analysis in ALL Māori values while maintaining accessibility through plain English communication. The publication serves as a bridge between traditional knowledge systems and contemporary digital activism, ensuring that complex political and social issues are understood by readers of all backgrounds1.
The platform's essay structure includes Māori greetings with translations, provocative taglines that capture critique, and comprehensive analysis that reveals hidden connections between people, places, and events. Each piece examines the intersections of race, class, and gender while addressing counterarguments with scholarly rigor.
