“TAIAHA TĀ: The Māori Green Lantern Cuts Through Trump’s Epstein Deflection” - 16 November 2025
Hidden Connections: Cui Bono? Cui Malo?
Mōrena Aotearoa,
On November 14, 2025, President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that he would direct Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s ties to Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, JPMorgan Chase, and “many other people and institutions.” This maneuver—deployed within days of House Democrats releasing emails in which the late sex trafficker mentioned Trump directly—marks a textbook deployment of political jujutsu: use state power (the DOJ, FBI) to deflect scrutiny from yourself by redirecting it toward political opponents. Kaitiaki Māori must read what lies beneath.[1]
The cui bono (who benefits) is Trump. The cui malo (who is harmed) are the 191+ survivors of Epstein’s sex trafficking who have already received inadequate settlements, and the principle that wealthy elites cannot weaponize law enforcement to escape accountability for their own conduct.
Whakapapa the network, and five hidden truths emerge.
Background: Te Kauwae Runga & Raro—The Unseen & The Tangible
The Documentary Evidence of Trump-Epstein Ties
Trump and Epstein were documented associates from the 1980s through 2004. Photos from 1993 confirm Epstein attended Trump’s wedding to Marla Maples at the Plaza Hotel. A 1999 Victoria’s Secret fashion event shows them together, laughing and conversing. In a 2002 New York Magazine profile, Trump stated: “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”[2][3][4]
In 2003, Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell organized a 50th birthday album for Epstein. According to the Wall Street Journal, a letter bearing Trump’s name—featuring a hand-drawn outline of a naked woman and the closing line “Happy Birthday—and may every day be another wonderful secret”—was included in that album. Trump has denied writing it, calling it “fake” and suing the Journal for $10 billion. Yet the letter was provided to the House Oversight Committee by Epstein’s estate itself.[5][6][7]
In 2004, Trump and Epstein fell into a public dispute over the Maison de L’Amitié, an oceanfront Palm Beach property. Trump won the bidding war. Court records indicate the two men faced off as “two very large Palm Beach egos going at it.” This falling-out preceded Epstein’s 2006 arrest on prostitution charges.[8]
Epstein’s Financial Infrastructure: The Banks Knew
JPMorgan Chase maintained Epstein as a client from 1998 to 2013—15 years—even after his 2006 prostitution arrest and guilty plea in 2008. Internal JPMorgan emails showed employees flagged suspicious financial activity, but leadership ignored warnings because Epstein was profitable. In 2023, JPMorgan paid $290 million (NZ$511m) to settle a class action lawsuit by 191+ survivors who alleged the bank “turned a blind eye to unusual cash transactions” that enabled trafficking. JPMorgan also paid $75 million to the US Virgin Islands. The bank “did not admit or deny wrongdoing.”[9][10][11][12]
Deutsche Bank then took Epstein on as a client in 2013—after JPMorgan dropped him—and maintained him until 2019. In 2023, Deutsche Bank paid $75 million to survivors for similarly enabling transfers.[13]
Translation: The system designed to catch financial crime (anti-money laundering controls, Know Your Customer rules) failed catastrophically. Banks chose profit over children. And when held accountable, they paid fines while admitting nothing.

Five Hidden Truths
1. Pam Bondi’s Own Epstein Complicity
Pam Bondi served as Florida Attorney General from 2011-2019. During her tenure, she did not challenge the controversial 2008 non-prosecution agreement that Epstein and his lawyers (Darren Indyke, Richard Kahn) had negotiated with then-US Attorney Alex Acosta. That deal allowed Epstein to plead guilty to state prostitution charges, serve 13 months, and avoid federal sex trafficking prosecution. When the agreement was later challenged in court, Judge Kenneth Marra ruled in 2015 that prosecutors violated the law by failing to notify victims of the deal.[14][15][16]
Bondi also led anti-trafficking initiatives rhetorically—she established a human trafficking council, investigated Catholic clergy abuse—but took no action on the Epstein non-prosecution agreement that literally freed a trafficker.[17]
In February 2025, Bondi claimed on Fox News that Epstein’s “client list” was “sitting on my desk” ready to release. In July 2025, the Justice Department issued a memo stating definitively: the client list does not exist. Bondi had promoted conspiracy theories that inflamed the MAGA base, then walked them back, causing widespread anger among Trump’s own supporters.[18][19][20]
Translation: Bondi is not a crusader for survivors. She enabled the system that failed them, then misled the public about evidence.
2. Trump’s Directive Is Retaliatory, Not Investigative
Trump’s Truth Social post accused Democrats of “using the Epstein Hoax...to try and deflect from their disastrous SHUTDOWN.” He labeled the Epstein files release effort “another Russia, Russia, Russia Scam, with all arrows pointing to the Democrats.” He called Republicans pushing for file release “soft and foolish.”[21][22][23]
This is political jiu-jitsu: deploy state power against political enemies while denying your own exposure. The directive to investigate Clinton, Summers, Hoffman, and JPMorgan appears to promise transparency while achieving the opposite—it shifts DOJ resources away from investigating Trump’s own Epstein ties and toward investigating Democrats.
Compare: When Democrats and some Republicans called for releasing all Epstein files (which would include Trump mentions and potentially embarrassing documents), Trump held a Situation Room meeting to pressure GOP lawmakers to oppose the discharge petition. He called the discharge petition “another Hoax.” When it succeeded anyway, he had Bondi downplay findings, leading to his base’s fury over the “fake” client list.[24][25][26]
Translation: Trump uses the DOJ as a cudgel against opponents, not an instrument of justice.
3. The Maxwell Whakapapa: Family Corruption Begets Elite Enablement
Ghislaine Maxwell’s father, Robert Maxwell, was a British publishing tycoon who siphoned $1.2 billion from his companies’ pension funds before dying mysteriously in 1991 (fell from his yacht in the Atlantic). His death left the family disgraced, bankrupt, and shunned. Ghislaine lost access to wealth and society.[27][28]
Enter Epstein. Maxwell “resumed a wealthy lifestyle” through her relationship with Epstein, whom she served as a “professional assistant,” hiring and managing his household staff and recruiting victims. She introduced Epstein to Clinton, Trump, Prince Andrew, and other elites in her social circle. She organized his birthday album (featuring Trump’s letter). She was convicted in December 2021 of sex trafficking and is serving 20 years.[29][30][31][32]
Hidden truth: The Epstein network was not a conspiracy. It was a patronage web. Maxwell traded her social connections for financial security. The elites in her circle benefited from proximity to wealth and power that Epstein provided. Trump used Epstein’s private jet, attended his parties, and socialized with him until their 2004 falling-out over real estate.
Translation: Elite networks protect their own. Maxwell’s whakapapa (genealogy) shows how trauma—family corruption, financial collapse—can lead to complicity in darker crimes. Māori know this: colonialism creates cascading harms. So does elite capture.
4. The Acosta Plea Deal: How a “Dealmaker” Freed a Trafficker
In 2008, then-US Attorney Alex Acosta negotiated what Miami Herald called the “deal of the millennium” for Epstein: plead guilty to state charges, 13 months jail, avoid federal sex trafficking prosecution entirely.[33]
In 2019, Trump appointed Acosta as Labor Secretary. When the plea deal resurfaced in 2025, Acosta defended it in closed testimony to House investigators, claiming it was justified at the time. Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia called Acosta’s position “a seriously flawed inquiry.”[34][35]
Why is Acosta relevant? Because Trump promoted—and continues to defend—the man who negotiated the deal that kept Epstein out of federal prison. Acosta is now co-deputy director of the FBI (appointed February 2025).[36]
Translation: Trump’s orbit is filled with people who either enabled, profited from, or looked the other way on Epstein’s crimes. Trump directing an “investigation” into Epstein’s ties is like asking a toxic workplace manager to investigate sexual harassment.
5. The Deflection Playbook: Bondi as Political Instrument
Bondi has become Trump’s enforcer. In April 2025, she sold $1-5 million in Trump Media shares on the same day Trump announced tariffs, cashing in on non-public knowledge. She earned at least $3 million consulting for Trump Media before her confirmation. She holds $2-10 million in remaining Trump Media shares, per disclosures.[37][38][39]
Under her tenure as Attorney General, she has:
· Dismissed outstanding January 6 insurrection cases at Trump’s direction[40]
· Opened investigations into Trump critics (Rep. Eugene Vindman over his Ukraine whistleblowing, Rep. Robert Garcia, Senator Chuck Schumer)[41]
· Filed misconduct complaints against Judge Boas, who ruled against Trump’s policies[42]
· Pressured Republicans to block the Epstein files discharge petition[43]
· Promoted false conspiracy theories about an Epstein “client list,” then watched her DOJ walk that back, enraging Trump’s base[44]
She is not independent. She is Trump’s appendage.
Implications: Quantified Harm & Pathways to Action
The Survivors’ Injustice
Of approximately 225 survivor applications to the Epstein compensation fund, only ~150 received settlements. Payments ranged from low six figures to over $1 million, with total disbursement around $121 million (not counting the $365 million in bank settlements). Some survivors received no settlement at all.[45][46]

Power Network: Trump’s Epstein Investigation Directive (November 2025)
Crucially: victims who accepted settlements waived the right to sue not only Epstein’s estate but also his co-conspirators—including Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving 20 years. The executor lawyers (Darren Indyke, Richard Kahn) were accused by the US Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George of being “indispensable captains” of Epstein’s trafficking enterprise, yet they remain his estate executors.

Financial Accountability: Bank Settlements for Epstein Trafficking Facilitation (2023)
Translation: The system is rigged. Survivors get crumbs. Enablers keep power and money.
Trump’s November 2025 Directive: Strategic Outcome
If Trump’s directive to Bondi succeeds in focusing the DOJ on investigating Clinton, Summers, Hoffman, and JPMorgan, the outcome will be:
- Deflection from Trump’s own Epstein ties (social relationship, 1993 wedding attendance, 2003 birthday letter, 2004 falling-out)
- Weaponization of the DOJ against political opponents (Democrat Clinton; Democrat-aligned Summers and Hoffman)
- Continued obstruction of full file release (Trump and Bondi will control the narrative—”See, we ARE investigating, just not what you think”)
- Erosion of rule of law (the DOJ investigates based on political utility, not evidence or harm)
Compare Trump’s approach to what real accountability looks like: In the Maxwell trial and Acosta’s congressional testimony, prosecutors and lawmakers demanded specific answers about who knew what and when. That is mana-enhancing (restores integrity). Trump’s approach—”investigate my enemies”—is mana-depleting (corrupts institutions).
Rangatiratanga Action & Moral Clarity
Ko te Rangatira te Tangata, Ko te Tangata te Tapu.
The leader is measured by the person; the person is sacred. Trump’s November 2025 directive treats the DOJ—and Pam Bondi—as extensions of his ego, not instruments of justice. Bondi, for her part, has chosen personal loyalty and financial enrichment over institutional integrity. Both have broken the tapu (sacred boundary) that separates politics from law enforcement.
For Māori whānau, the lesson is clear:
White supremacy’s elite operate a two-tiered system of justice. Epstein’s banks pay fines but admit no wrongdoing. Maxwell takes the fall while executor lawyers (her co-conspirators) retain power. Trump directs investigations of political opponents while his own ties to the network remain unscrutinized. Survivors wait years for inadequate settlements while the powerful protect each other.
Mahi tika (right action):
- Demand the full Epstein file release, including all Trump mentions, all bank communications, all flight logs—without DOJ editorializing or “credibility” filters.
- Investigate Pam Bondi’s non-action on the Epstein case during her Florida AG tenure. Did she coordinate with Acosta to protect the deal? What communications exist?
- Reclaim rangatiratanga by building parallel accountability systems. Māori whānau have survived colonialism through collective kaupapa Māori institutions. Survivors should fund independent investigations, hire Māori legal scholars versed in victimology and restorative justice, and publicize findings without needing DOJ approval.
- Name the system, not just the individuals. Trump, Bondi, Acosta, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Maxwell’s executors—all are cogs in a machine that trades in impunity for the wealthy. The machine itself requires transformation: mandatory victim notification in plea deals, criminal liability for executives who ignore trafficking warnings, DOJ independence from political direction.
- Support Māori and Pacific whānau survivors of trafficking and sexual abuse. Epstein’s crimes did not happen in isolation. Indigenous women and girls face disproportionate trafficking rates worldwide. Real solidarity means resourcing indigenous-led survivor movements, not just criticizing Trump.
Kia kaha. Ka tū. Mana tū ki te kaupapa.
