Andrew Bayly is not in the Antarctic because he is the best man for the job. He is there because the “Old Boys’ Network” doesn’t fire its own

—it just reassigns them.

Stripped of his Ministerial warrant in February 2025 after a second behavioural scandal, Bayly has pivoted to a role that requires no Prime Ministerial oversight and no voter approval:

Chair of the Antarctic Parliamentarians Assembly. It is a masterclass in failing upwards, funded by the very corporate elites who benefit from the National Party’s dominance.

October 2024: Bayly is exposed for the “Loser” incident. During a visit to a business, he calls a worker a “loser” and tells him to “take some wine and f*** off.” As revealed by RNZ, Bayly sent “frantic” texts trying to correct the record about his alcohol consumption that day.
February 2025: Bayly resigns as Minister of Commerce and Small Business. The final straw is a complaint that he “placed a hand” on a staffer during an argument, as reported by BBC.
December 2025: Bayly resurfaces in Wellington, hosting diplomats and scientists as the Chair of the Antarctic Parliamentarians Assembly.

He didn’t disappear. He just moved to a room where the door locks from the inside.

A Timeline Of Disgrace

2. The Hidden Connection: The “Masthead” Money

Bayly’s resurrection is not a solo act. It is sponsored content.

In his speech to the Assembly, Bayly explicitly thanks “Mark and Ainsley” for their support. This refers to Mark Stewart and Ainsley Walter of Masthead, a powerful investment group. Mark Stewart is a heavyweight donor and a key figure in the Antarctic Heritage Trust.

The Connection: Bayly, a former merchant banker, speaks the same language as Stewart.
The Money: In 2024, the National Party raked in nearly $5 million in donations, more than triple Labour’s haul, as detailed by NZ Herald.
The Grift: The Assembly dinner wasn’t just a government function; it was a networking event for the donor class. Bayly serves as the bridge between parliamentary power and private wealth, insulating him from the consequences of his behaviour.

3. The “Adventure” Myth vs. Reality

Bayly loves to spin his Antarctic connection as a “fight for conservation.” He recounts his “visual assault” of the continent and his mountaineering feats. But let’s look at the data.

Antarctica is under siege from tourism—the very industry Bayly’s “sustainable” approach often facilitates. Visitor numbers have exploded from ~8,000 in the 90s to over 120,000 today.

4. The Financial “Penalty” (Or Lack Thereof)

Why does he cling to this role? Because without it, he is just a backbencher with a bad reputation. The financial hit of losing his Ministry was significant—a drop of nearly $140,000 a year.

When Andrew Bayly stands before 20 nations as New Zealand’s representative, he sends a clear message:

In Aotearoa, powerful men don’t have to change; they just have to change venues.

He called a worker a “bum” and a “loser.” Yet, he is the one drinking wine on the taxpayer’s (and donor’s) dime, insulated by a system that values “merchant banker” connections over mana.

Failing Upwards

Andrew Bayly is in the Antarctic sphere because he created a club where he couldn’t be fired. It is a sanctuary for his ego, funded by the wealthy, and built on the pretence that a man who can’t respect a worker is qualified to respect a continent.

He is not a guardian. He is a gatekeeper.
