The blustering polemic by Muriel Newman on the NZCPR website is a tired rerun of colonial panic, laced with half-truths and outright fabrications. Below is a systematic demolition of her claims, followed by a stark exposure of the New Zealand Centre for Political Research (NZCPR) as a laundering unit for white-supremacist talking points.

## 1\. Weaponising Te Tiriti: Newman’s Core Falsehoods

## 1.1 “Māori ceded sovereignty absolutely in 1840”

*Fact-check*

# *Verdict*  
Newman cherry-picks a 1922 speech by Āpirana Ngata, rips it from context, and ignores over a century of scholarship, judicial dicta and Tribunal evidence. That is historical vandalism, not analysis.

## 1.2 “Co-governance equals tribal rule and apartheid”

*Fact-check*

- Co-governance is already functioning in the Waikato River Authority, Whanganui River governance, and Te Urewera Board. # *Verdict*  
Calling shared management of public resources “apartheid” is grotesque inversion. The only apartheid on display is NZCPR’s insistence that Pākehā retain exclusive control, despite Treaty guarantees.

## 1.3 “Te reo Māori domination is being forced on the public”

*Fact-check*

- Census 2023: only 4.3% of New Zealanders can hold a conversation in te reo [7](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/te-manu-korihi/530418/concern-over-low-percentage-of-maori-speaking-te-reo?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz). That is hardly “domination”.

Newman conflates visibility with coercion — a classic majority-fragility response. Visibility of Māori culture is not oppression; it is Treaty compliance.

## 1.4 “Māori Health Authority proves race-based apartheid”

# *Verdict*  
Opposing targeted interventions to close a 7-year life-expectancy gap is not “colour-blind”; it is colour-denial, locking in structural racism.

## 1.5 “Prisons prove Māori privilege is rampant”

*Fact-check*

# These articles recycle the same fear-mongering frame: Māori rights = white extinction. ## 3\. NZCPR: The Infrastructure of White Supremacy

1. **Consistent replacement-theory messaging**

2. **Platforming extremist groups**  
NZCPR articles frequently cite Action Zealandia talking points — e.g., demonising “coastal elites”, lauding “European heritage”. Through pseudo-scholarship it pushes a race-realist dogma: Māori are biologically, culturally or intellectually unsuited to modern governance. # A think-tank that serially publishes race-replacement conspiracy theories, collaborates ideologically with listed hate groups, and lobbies to rescind Indigenous rights fits every academic and security-service criterion for a white-supremacist propaganda node.

## Call to Action

1. **Media hygiene**: Journalists must cease laundering NZCPR press releases as credible “research”.
2. **Regulatory scrutiny**: Charities Services and IRD should examine whether NZCPR’s campaigning breaches anti-discrimination statutes.
3. **Civic resilience**: Schools, unions, and community organisations must equip whānau with historical literacy to inoculate against settler-fragility myths.
