Nobody is arguing against nutrition. What is mauri-*depleting* — what actively drains the life force of a system and the people inside it — is using the *language* of prevention to dodge the *funding* of care. Commissioning a review is not the same as hiring a nurse. They gutted pay equity, then had the audacity to promise nurses "better acknowledgment."** On 19 March 2025, six ministers met for 45 minutes and decided to raise the threshold for "predominantly female" pay equity claims from 60% to 70%, strip out cross-sector comparators, and kill all 33 existing claims mid-process — covering roughly 180,000 workers, disproportionately Māori and Pacific women, disproportionately nurses. Treasury confirmed [$12.8 billion](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/590100/how-a-crucial-45-minute-meeting-between-ministers-took-pay-equity-claims-away-from-tens-of-thousands-of-women?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) earmarked for those settlements went back into Budget allowances instead. The Equal Pay Amendment Act passed under urgency in three days. NZ First sat in that Cabinet. NZ First did not vote against it. And now, in 2026, the party's entire nurse-facing promise is: "find better ways to acknowledge our nurses." No dollar figure. No funded mechanism. Acknowledgment is not a wage. ### **2\. Their own Associate Health Minister cut $216 million that could have staffed an ED.** Casey Costello, NZ First's Associate Health Minister, halved the excise tax on Heated Tobacco Products, costed at [$216 million](https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/minister-brushes-revelation-tobacco-giant-targeted-nz-first?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) in foregone Crown revenue. Leaked 2017 Philip Morris lobbying documents *named New Zealand First specifically* as a party to target for favourable heated-tobacco regulation. It is hundreds of nursing salaries that instead went to a tobacco company's bottom line. ### **3\. The "2,000 extra doctors" promise from 2023 evaporated — so the 2026 plan recycles the same deregulation trick, aimed at supplements instead of pharmaceuticals.** Health NZ's own quarterly workforce data, [fetched directly from The Post's reporting](https://www.thepost.co.nz/politics/361051862/nursing-workforce-growth-has-stalled-despite-government-claims-vacancies-are-falling?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), shows nursing FTEs grew by more than 3,000 between March 2023 and March 2024 — then by just **54** in the two years since. Fifty-four. Across the entire country. While the health minister stood in the House quoting a different, inflated number that included part-time hires and three months of the previous government's term. ### **5\. Whanganui is not an outlier. It's the design.** The same week Whanganui's ED hit up to 253% occupancy, Gisborne nurses were describing "[absolute chaos](https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/09/06/absolute-chaos-gisborne-hospital-ed-struggles-with-staff-shortages/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)," Tauranga staff declared a "[state of emergency](https://ground.news/article/tauranga-hospital-emergency-department-staff-declare-state-of-emergency?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)" after a patient collapsed in a waiting-room toilet, and North Shore nurses called their ward "[feral](https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/24/nightmare-patients-left-waiting-in-soiled-beds-at-north-shore-ed/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)." This is not bad luck spread across five hospitals. Peters personally aligned Aotearoa with the global "health freedom" bloc rejecting WHO oversight.** New Zealand's formal rejection of the 2024 WHO International Health Regulations amendments, delivered by Peters under Article 61, sits inside the same ideological current — sovereignty rhetoric over global health cooperation — that defines Kennedy's HHS. ### **7\. The rhetoric is not a coincidence — it is the same four-pillar script.** Kennedy's MAHA Commission names poor diet, chemical exposure, inactivity, and "overmedicalization" as the four drivers of chronic disease (NPR; The Hill). NZ First's [15-point plan](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/election-2026-nz-firsts-15-point-health-policy-feat-nutrition-intravenous-vitamin-c-and-informed-consent/YIRVDCIYNVBVHKNFD3UVEERR3Q/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) opens with "metabolic health," moves through "informed consent" and "restore professional autonomy" for GPs squeezed by "administrative burden" — our own vernacular for overmedicalization — and closes on nutrition and vitamin trials. Same four beats. Different accent. ### **8\. Both movements fixate on the same two micronutrients, sold with the same "sovereignty of the body" framing.** NZ First's plan pledges hospital trials of intravenous vitamin C and a review of vitamin D — the identical pairing Kennedy and allied outlets like ANH-USA promote for "immune resilience." Peters justifies removing Medsafe/Pharmac barriers as letting people take "early, proactive steps." Kennedy calls it "removing barriers." Same sentence, different flag. ### **9\. New Zealand's anti-vaccine networks physically stood next to Kennedy before either had state power.** In 2019, Kennedy travelled to Samoa to "study" the MMR vaccine. Samoa's Director-General of Health, Dr Alec Ekeroma, told [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2026/08/27/rfk-jr-lied-to-about-famous-samoan-trip-during-confirmation-hearings-new-letter-indicates/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz): "Anti-vaxxers from New Zealand came to be with him here. That's how I know that his influence can be far-reaching." Four months later, 5,700 people were sick and 83 were dead. Five years after that, Peters' own coalition agreement ended all remaining COVID-19 vaccine mandates and launched a "vaccine injuries" inquiry. NZ First's own policy page states: "those who are hesitant or anti-vaccination... have the fundamental right to freedom of choice." I am not claiming Peters phoned Kennedy. I am telling you the networks and the language arrived here before the politics did. ### **10\. Both governments' "solutions" leave the industries they blame completely untouched, while the workforce absorbing the damage stays unfunded.** Kennedy himself admitted in May 2025: "There is no budget." NZ First's plan has no published costing for any of its 15 points. Same pattern. Same excuse. The solution: restore the Equal Pay Amendment Act's cancelled claims in full, backdated, under a permanent statutory Pay Equity Commissioner insulated from political urgency. What this means through a tikanga lens for a Western reader unfamiliar with the concept: mana wāhine — the standing, dignity, and authority of women — is not a slogan, it's a measurable economic condition. Stripping $12.8 billion from predominantly female workforces under urgency, with no consultation, is a direct assault on mana wāhine, quantifiable in dollars and hours worked unpaid. ### **Example Two: The $216 Million Tobacco Gift.** The harm: a 50% excise cut on Heated Tobacco Products, costed at $216 million in lost Crown revenue, delivered by the minister a tobacco company's own leaked strategy document had named as a target. The solution: reverse the excise cut, redirect the recovered revenue directly into Smokefree cessation services and ED nurse staffing, and mandate public disclosure of any minister's contact with tobacco industry lobbyists. Through a tikanga lens: kaitiakitanga — guardianship — means protecting the vulnerable from predatory extraction, not handing them a tax break. A minister who lets a lobbied-for tax cut through is not exercising kaitiakitanga over public health; she is abandoning it. ### **Example Three: The Abolished Māori Health Authority.** The harm: Te Aka Whai Ora, the one statutory agency built to target Māori health inequity, was disestablished with the Crown conceding to the Waitangi Tribunal it had no alternative plan. The solution: re-establish a Māori-led health commissioning authority with binding statutory power, not an advisory afterthought — which is precisely what the Green Party's own health policy proposes. Through a tikanga lens: rangatiratanga means the authority to determine your own wellbeing pathway. Removing the one agency built for that purpose, without replacing it, is not neutral administrative tidying.
