“When Power Rapes With Impunity: How Elite Networks Shield Predators While Blaming Victims” - 22 October 2025

Kia ora e te whānau,

A powerful man on Jeffrey Epsteins private island in 2002 choked Virginia Giuffre until she lost consciousness, laughed as she begged for her life, and raped her so savagely she bled from her mouth, vagina, and anus. When the 18-year-old pleaded with Epstein not to send her back, he responded coldly: “Youll get that sometimes.” Then he sent her back to the same man anyway. This is not ancient history. This is how power operates right now. Giuffre named this predator only as a “well-known Prime Minister” in her memoir, published six months after she died by suicide in April 2025. Court documents previously linked these allegations to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who denies everything.

Meanwhile, Prince Andrew just surrendered his royal titles after fresh evidence showed he lied about when he stopped contacting Epstein. Peter Mandelson, Britains ambassador to the United States, was fired after emails revealed he called Epstein “my best pal” and advised him to “fight for early release” from his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor. The network protecting these predators spans presidents, prime ministers, and princes. Donald Trump called Epstein a “terrific guy” who “likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side”. Bill Clinton flew repeatedly on Epsteins private jet.

This is not about one dead predator. This is about a system where wealth, whiteness, and power create immunity from consequences while victims are discredited, silenced, and driven to death.

Background: Understanding the Machinery of Elite Protection

To understand how we arrived at this point, we must first understand the terms at play. Sex trafficking is the exploitation of humans through force, fraud, or coercion for commercial sex, and it thrives in systems of racial capitalism and neoliberalism that create vulnerable populations. White supremacy in this context is not merely individual prejudice but a structural system maintaining wealth, power, and privilege that positions predominantly white elites as decision-makers and authorities while positioning racialized communities as expendable.

From a Māori perspective, this matters profoundly because colonization operates through the same mechanisms: powerful men declaring ownership over bodies and lands, using law and violence to enforce that ownership, then rewriting history to justify their crimes. The concept of kaitiakitanga, guardianship and protection, stands in direct opposition to systems that treat people as property to be exploited. When we see global elites trafficking young women with impunity, we recognize the same colonial logic that enabled settlers to abuse Māori women and children while institutions looked away.

Jeffrey Epstein did not act alone. He built and operated within a network of wealth and political power that enabled his crimes for decades. Between 2002 and 2019, Epstein maintained connections with presidents, prime ministers, tech billionaires, and royalty, leveraging these relationships to evade accountability. The historical context reveals that Epstein received an extraordinary 2008 plea deal that allowed him to serve just 18 months in a private wing of a county jail instead of facing federal sex trafficking charges that could have imprisoned him for life. The prosecutor who approved that deal, Alexander Acosta, later became Donald Trumps Secretary of Labor.

Timeline showing how powerful elites maintained protection within the Epstein trafficking network across 23 years, from initial abuse to posthumous memoir publication

The Issue: A Posthumous Testament to Savage Violence and Elite Protection

Virginia Giuffres memoir “Nobodys Girl,” released this week, details the horrific reality of being trafficked by Epstein from age 16 to 19. But one encounter stands out for its brutality and for what it reveals about how power operates. On Epsteins Caribbean island in 2002, she was sent to a cabana with a man she identifies only as a “well-known Prime Minister”. What happened next, she writes, was the most savage rape she experienced in years of trafficking.

“He repeatedly choked me until I lost consciousness and took pleasure in seeing me fear for my life,” Giuffre wrote. “Horrifically, the Prime Minister laughed when he hurt me and got more aroused when I begged him to stop. I emerged from the cabana bleeding from my mouth, vagina, and anus.”

This matters to Māori because we understand violence as inseparable from power structures. This was not passion or loss of control. This was deliberate sadism by someone who knew he would face no consequences. Someone so protected by systems of power that he could laugh while destroying another human being.

Giuffre begged Epstein on her knees not to send her back. He refused, saying coldly: “Youll get that sometimes”. Then Epstein sent her back to the same man aboard his private jet. This reveals the transactional nature of elite networks: Epstein owed this man something, or feared him, or both. Young womens bodies were the currency.

Court documents reveal Giuffre had previously accused Ehud Barak, who served as Israels Prime Minister from 1999 to 2001, though he has repeatedly denied the allegations. Leaked emails show Baraks assistant forwarded him articles in 2011 detailing Giuffres accusations, meaning he knew about the allegations for over a decade. In 2015, Barak accepted a reported one million dollar investment from Epstein in a technology startup, and Epstein invested millions in Carbyne, an Israeli security company connected to Barak and Israels defense industry.

The scope of elite protection becomes clearer when we examine the full network. Prince Andrew settled a civil lawsuit with Giuffre in 2022 for an estimated three to twelve million pounds while admitting no wrongdoing but acknowledging Giuffre as “an established victim of abuse”. Giuffre claims Andrews team even hired internet trolls to harass her. Fresh emails revealed this month show Andrew lied in his infamous 2019 BBC interview about when he stopped contacting Epstein. He claimed he cut contact in December 2010, but an email from February 2011 shows Andrew writing to Epstein: “It would seem we are in this together”.

Network diagram revealing connections between Jeffrey Epstein and global power elites, showing patterns of protection and minimal accountability despite decades of abuse

Then there is Peter Mandelson, the veteran Labour politician who called Epstein “my best pal” in a 2003 birthday note. Worse still, emails published in September 2025 show that even after Epsteins 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor, Mandelson wrote to him: “I think the world of you and I feel hopeless and furious about what has happened”. Mandelson advised Epstein to “fight for early release” and quoted Sun Tzus “Art of War”. After these revelations, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer fired Mandelson as ambassador to the United States.

The American political establishment remains implicated as well. Donald Trumps connection to Epstein spans decades, with a 1992 video showing them partying together at Mar-a-Lago and Trump himself saying in 2002: “Ive known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. Hes a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side”. Flight logs and calendars show plans for meetings between Epstein and tech billionaires including Peter Thiel, who holds New Zealand citizenship.

This matters to us in Aotearoa because these networks of power do not respect borders. When Peter Thiel appears in Epsteins calendars, we must ask what connections exist between global elite networks and the powerful figures operating in our own country.

Analysis: Unpacking the Mechanisms of Elite Immunity

The Epstein case exposes six interlocking mechanisms through which power protects predators. Understanding these systems is essential because they operate not just in sex trafficking cases but across all institutions where elites maintain control.

Analysis of six key mechanisms wealthy elites used to avoid accountability in the Epstein case, from wealth and legal teams to institutional complicity and victim discrediting

Epsteins 2008 plea deal remains one of the most extraordinary examples of wealth buying impunity. Facing federal sex trafficking charges that could have resulted in life imprisonment, Epstein assembled a legal dream team that included Alan Dershowitz and successfully negotiated a deal where he pleaded guilty only to state-level prostitution charges. He served just 18 months, much of it in a private wing with work-release privileges that allowed him to leave jail 12 hours a day, six days a week.

The principle of manaakitanga, caring for others, demands we recognize this is not justice. This is wealth purchasing freedom while poor communities face decades of imprisonment for minor drug offenses. Miami Herald investigations revealed Epsteins lawyers essentially dictated terms to prosecutors, with emails showing “what Mr. Epstein wanted he was able to get from prosecutors”.

Political Connections Creating Immunity

Alexander Acosta, the US Attorney who approved Epsteins 2008 plea deal, later became Secretary of Labor under Donald Trump. This is not coincidence. This is how elite networks operate: protect each other, then reward that protection with positions of greater power. Acosta finally resigned in 2019 after renewed scrutiny of the Epstein deal, but by then the damage was done.

The rotating door between prosecution, politics, and private practice ensures that lawyers know their future wealth depends on maintaining elite favor. Challenge the powerful too aggressively and career advancement disappears. Studies of anti-trafficking work reveal how neoliberalism and white supremacy structure who gets protected and who gets prosecuted, with predominantly white elites directing interventions in the Global South while protecting their own.

Media Control and Victim Discrediting

Prince Andrews legal team attempted to hire internet trolls to harass Virginia Giuffre during her civil case. Andrews defenders claimed a photograph showing him with his arm around the 17-year-old Giuffre was doctored, despite the image being published by British media in 2011. The strategy is always the same: attack the credibility of victims while protecting the reputation of predators.

The concept of aroha, love and compassion, requires us to center victims rather than their abusers. Yet our media systems do the opposite. Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of recruiting and grooming underage girls for Epstein, is serving 20 years, but most of the powerful men who paid to rape those girls face no criminal charges whatsoever.

Settlements and Non-Disclosure Agreements

Prince Andrews settlement with Virginia Giuffre remains confidential, though estimates range from three to twelve million pounds. The settlement included no admission of liability, allowing Andrew to avoid a trial where he would have been forced to testify under oath. Reports suggested both parties signed an agreement to remain silent about the case until after Queen Elizabeth IIs Platinum Jubilee in 2023, prioritizing royal image management over public accountability.

This use of money to silence victims contradicts the principle of pono, acting with integrity and righteousness. Giuffres lawyer David Boies stated the settlement “does not in any way insulate him from any criminal liability that would otherwise exist”, but criminal charges require prosecutors willing to challenge royal power, and no criminal investigation of Andrew has materialized.

Institutional Complicity and Delayed Release of Evidence

The Trump administration faced intense pressure throughout 2025 to release the full “Epstein files”, documents from law enforcement investigations into Epsteins trafficking network. Trump repeatedly promised during his campaign to declassify these files, only to back away once in office. FBI director Kash Patel, who previously spread conspiracy theories claiming Epstein was murdered by the Clintons, testified that there was no evidence Epstein trafficked women to anyone but himself, a claim that contradicts Maxwells conviction for recruiting girls for Epstein to traffic to others.

Documents released by Congressional Democrats in September 2025 included Epsteins “birthday book” showing connections to Trump, Clinton, and Mandelson, but Republicans accused Democrats of “cherry-picking documents and politicising” the release. The truth is both parties have members implicated, which explains why full transparency remains elusive even now, six years after Epsteins death.

Revealing Hidden Connections: Christian Nationalism and Elite Networks

The Epstein case cannot be separated from broader systems of Christian nationalism and white supremacy that shape who gets protected. Research demonstrates that Christian nationalism is strongly related to support for political violence when combined with perceived victimhood, white identity, and conspiratorial thinking. Elite networks leverage religious rhetoric about traditional values and family to mask their own exploitation of vulnerable people.

Studies analyzing sex trafficking through a critical race feminist lens reveal how racism intersects with structural oppression to obscure choice for people of color in Americas prostitution industry. White supremacy operates not through individual hatred but as “a system of wealth, power, and privilege” that positions white elites as authorities and decision-makers while treating racialized populations as expendable.

When we examine Epsteins network, we see predominantly white men in positions of supreme power trafficking predominantly young women of diverse backgrounds. The neoliberal order protects the economic interests of the developed world against the rest of the world population, producing permanent underdevelopment that affects mostly countries characterized as nonwhite. This global inequality creates the vulnerable populations that traffickers exploit.

The principle of whanaungatanga, kinship and collective responsibility, demands we recognize these connections. When powerful New Zealanders like Peter Thiel appear in documents connected to Epstein, we cannot pretend this is merely an overseas scandal. Elite networks operate globally, and when those elites base themselves in Aotearoa, they bring those networks with them.

Implications: What This Means for Aotearoa and the World

The implications of this case extend far beyond individual predators. This reveals systematic elite protection that operates across national boundaries and institutional sectors.

For Māori and other marginalized communities in Aotearoa, this pattern is devastatingly familiar. Colonial systems have always protected powerful men who abuse vulnerable people. Research on race and justice in New Zealand shows how institutions historically exempted European men from accountability while over-policing Māori communities. The same structures that enabled Epstein to traffic young women for decades are the structures that enable ongoing violence against Māori women and children in Aotearoa.

The impact on survivors like Virginia Giuffre cannot be overstated. She spent years fighting for justice, faced vicious attacks on her credibility, finally won a settlement, and then died by suicide at age 41. Her brother told media after Andrews title surrender: “Weve shed a lot of happy and sad tears today. In a lot of ways this vindicates Virginia”. But vindication after death is cold comfort. The system killed her as surely as if theyd choked her themselves.

The connection to larger patterns of oppression becomes clear when we examine how Christian nationalism combines with white identity to produce support for political violence. Elite networks use religious rhetoric about morality and traditional values while engaging in the very behaviors they publicly condemn. This hypocrisy serves a function: by claiming moral authority, elites position themselves as the arbiters of acceptable behavior while exempting themselves from accountability.

For Māori specifically, this echoes how colonial authorities used Christian morality to justify their own violence and theft while demonizing Māori cultural practices. The principle of tika, justice and correctness, requires us to name this pattern clearly: those who claim moral authority most loudly are often those committing the worst abuses behind closed doors.

Demanding True Accountability

Virginia Giuffres memoir stands as testimony that no amount of wealth or power can fully silence the truth. Despite settlement agreements, despite attacks on her credibility, despite the suicide that ended her life, her words now force the world to confront what these powerful men did.

The Māori Green Lantern Fighting Misinformation And Disinformation From The Far Right

Prince Andrew has surrendered use of his titles, though he retains the title of prince and remains in the line of succession. Peter Mandelson lost his ambassadorship. But Ehud Barak faces no consequences. Donald Trump faces no consequences. Bill Clinton faces no consequences. The dozens of other powerful men who paid to rape trafficked girls face no consequences.

UK polling shows 63 percent strongly support stripping Andrew of his remaining titles, with another 17 percent somewhat supporting the move. The public understands what elites refuse to acknowledge: no one should be above accountability, regardless of birth or wealth or position.

The call to action is clear. We must demand criminal investigations of all individuals credibly accused in the Epstein case. We must demand full release of all documents related to Epsteins trafficking network. We must demand systemic change to how institutions handle abuse allegations against powerful figures. We must center survivors rather than protecting the reputations of predators.

For those of us in Aotearoa, we must examine our own elite networks and their connections to global systems of exploitation. We must ask hard questions about who holds power in our institutions and whether they face genuine accountability. We must recognize that colonization, white supremacy, neoliberalism, and elite immunity are not separate issues but interlocking systems that protect the powerful while sacrificing the vulnerable.

Virginia Giuffre wrote in her memoir: “I believed that I might die a sex slave.” She escaped that fate only to spend years fighting for justice in systems designed to protect her abusers. Now she is dead, and her abusers remain free.

This is what power looks like when it operates without accountability. This is what white supremacy looks like in practice. This is what neoliberal capitalism produces: a world where young womens bodies are commodities traded between powerful men, where victims die while predators thrive, where justice is purchased rather than served.

We owe Virginia Giuffre and all survivors more than sorrow. We owe them a world where such abuse becomes impossible because systems of accountability actually function, where survivors are believed and protected, where no amount of wealth or status shields predators from consequences.
