On 3 January 2026, at 2:00am Venezuelan time, the United States military launched [Operation Absolute Resolve](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026%5FUnited%5FStates%5Fstrikes%5Fin%5FVenezuela?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)—a bombing campaign across Caracas involving 150 aircraft, Delta Force commandos, and CIA operatives that [captured President Nicolás Maduro](https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/01/04/captured-maduro-arrives-in-new-york-trump-says-us-will-run-venezuela/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) and his wife, spiriting them to a New York courtroom on narco-terrorism charges. [Thirty-two Cuban military personnel died](https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/01/06/timeline-how-the-us-captured-venezuelan-leader-nicolas-maduro/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) in the assault. Hours after Maduro’s capture, [Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583327/trump-s-new-us-mission-statement-strength-force-power?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) appeared on CNN to articulate the new American doctrine with chilling clarity: [“We live in a world, in the real world... that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power,”](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583327/trump-s-new-us-mission-statement-strength-force-power?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) Miller told Jake Tapper. [“These are the iron laws of the world.”](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583327/trump-s-new-us-mission-statement-strength-force-power?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) He continued: [“We’re a superpower. And under President Trump, we are going to conduct ourselves as a superpower.”](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583327/trump-s-new-us-mission-statement-strength-force-power?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)

[Independent Senator Bernie Sanders](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583327/trump-s-new-us-mission-statement-strength-force-power?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) responded with devastating precision: [“Mr. Miller gave a very good definition of imperialism.”](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583327/trump-s-new-us-mission-statement-strength-force-power?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)

Within 72 hours, Trump turned his gaze north to Greenland. [Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen](https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/01/06/danish-pm-says-us-takeover-of-greenland-would-mark-end-of-nato/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) warned that a US attack on another NATO member would mean [“everything stops... And what did New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon say? **Nothing.** Absolutely nothing.

[Foreign Minister Winston Peters](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583129/venezuela-attack-new-zealand-concerned-expects-everyone-to-follow-international-law-winston-peters?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) issued a [two-sentence statement](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583129/venezuela-attack-new-zealand-concerned-expects-everyone-to-follow-international-law-winston-peters?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz): [“New Zealand is concerned by and actively monitoring developments in Venezuela and expects all parties to act in accordance with international law.”](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583129/venezuela-attack-new-zealand-concerned-expects-everyone-to-follow-international-law-winston-peters?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) When media [contacted the Prime Minister’s office](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583129/venezuela-attack-new-zealand-concerned-expects-everyone-to-follow-international-law-winston-peters?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), they were [referred back to Peters’ X post](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583129/venezuela-attack-new-zealand-concerned-expects-everyone-to-follow-international-law-winston-peters?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz). No condemnation. No distancing from the illegal use of force. No moral clarity.

This silence is not mere diplomatic caution. It is **complicity**. It is **betrayal**. And it represents the most shameful abdication of Aotearoa’s hard-won independent foreign policy since the nuclear-free era began in 1984.

## **Te Ao Tawhito: When Aotearoa Stood Alone Against Empire**

## **David Lange and the Nuclear-Free Taiaha (1984-1987)**

In July 1984, [David Lange’s Labour government was elected](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/new-zealand-becomes-nuclear-free?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) on a platform that [included establishing New Zealand as a nuclear weapon-free zone](https://teara.govt.nz/en/united-states-and-new-zealand/page-3?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz). The roots of this movement stretched back to the 1960s: opposition to the Vietnam War, the emergence of [an “independent, ethical foreign policy,”](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/new-zealand-becomes-nuclear-free?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) and a deeply Māori-influenced environmentalism seeking to preserve Aotearoa as a [“green unspoilt land.”](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/new-zealand-becomes-nuclear-free?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)

In February 1985, the United States requested that the USS *Buchanan* visit New Zealand ports. Lange [refused the visit](https://e-tangata.co.nz/history/the-secret-history-of-our-nuclear-free-policy/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), locking in the nuclear-free policy despite intense pressure from Washington, Canberra, and Wellington’s own Foreign Affairs officials who urged compromise. In March 1985, Lange traveled to Oxford University to [defend the proposition that “nuclear weapons are morally indefensible”](https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/6l1/lange-david-russell?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) against American evangelist Jerry Falwell. His wit and moral conviction electrified the world.

The [New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act was passed into law in 1987](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/new-zealand-becomes-nuclear-free?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), enshrining the nuclear-free zone in legislation. The United States responded by [suspending its ANZUS obligations to New Zealand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New%5FZealand%5Fnuclear-free%5Fzone?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), effectively expelling Aotearoa from the security alliance. By 1990, even the [National Party accepted the “irreversibility of New Zealand’s nuclear-free position.”](https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/6l1/lange-david-russell?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) This was not a policy—it was a **constitutional transformation**. It represented the mauri of Aotearoa: independence, kaitiakitanga, and the rejection of empire.

## **Helen Clark and the Iraq War Refusal (2003)**

Twenty years later, when George W. Bush and Tony Blair demanded that New Zealand join the invasion of Iraq without a UN Security Council mandate, [Prime Minister Helen Clark refused](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/on-the-tiles-helen-clark-on-20-years-since-iraq-war-and-why-new-zealand-didnt-join/XNTFSHKVG5FRDIMNGCQRQLTKRI/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz). This whakapapa—from Lange to Clark—established the Treaty promise in action: that Aotearoa, despite its size, would stand for **tika** (justice), **pono** (integrity), and **aroha** (compassion for the vulnerable) in international affairs. The Crown, through these leaders, demonstrated that it could exercise kāwanatanga (governorship) in a manner that honored rangatiratanga (Māori sovereignty) by refusing to participate in imperial wars of aggression.

## **Te Pēhitanga: Luxon’s Systematic Betrayal of Independence**

Christopher Luxon represents the **inversion** of this legacy. Since taking office in November 2023, his government has pursued a [foreign policy described by ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)[*Foreign Policy*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)[ magazine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) as New Zealand’s [“biggest pivot since the ANZUS dispute in 1986.”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) But unlike Lange’s pivot *away* from empire, Luxon’s pivot is a **full genuflection** before it.

## **The Corporate Whakapapa: Luxon’s Masters**

To understand Luxon’s surrender, examine his whakapapa. He [worked for Unilever from 1993 to 2011](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), rising through the multinational corporation’s global hierarchy across Sydney, London, Chicago, and Toronto. He became [CEO of Air New Zealand in 2012](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), a position he held until 2019—a role that [made him heavily dependent on US routes and American business relationships](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher%5FLuxon?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz).

This is not a leader formed in the crucible of public service, activism, or the struggles of working whānau. This is a CEO whose entire professional identity was forged serving transnational capital. At a [United States Business Summit in December 2024](https://www.beehive.govt.nz/speech/speech-united-states-business-summit-2024?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz), Luxon emphasized that [“when we engage and trade with the world, we grow our economy at home,”](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/christopher-luxon-bb701b195%5Fwhen-we-engage-and-trade-with-the-world-activity-7401718235135725568?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) identifying the United States as a [“key relationship.”](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/christopher-luxon-bb701b195%5Fwhen-we-engage-and-trade-with-the-world-activity-7401718235135725568?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) In business rankings, [Luxon was ranked 15th best minister](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/573965/christopher-luxon-shrugs-off-criticism-after-being-ranked-15th-best-minister-by-business-leaders?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)—in his own Cabinet—by business leaders who judged him inadequate even by corporate standards.

## **The Five Eyes Trap: From Intelligence Sharing to War Crimes Complicity**

New Zealand’s entanglement in the [Five Eyes intelligence alliance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five%5FEyes?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) with the US, UK, Canada, and Australia has become a mechanism of imperial complicity. Under New Zealand law, [intelligence sharing with foreign partners must be “in accordance with NZ law and human rights obligations,”](https://www.dpmc.govt.nz/our-programmes/national-security-and-intelligence-oversight/intelligence-and-security-act-2017/sharing-information-overseas?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) and [“the agency cannot request a foreign partner to carry out activities that would be unlawful.”](https://www.dpmc.govt.nz/our-programmes/national-security-and-intelligence-oversight/intelligence-and-security-act-2017/sharing-information-overseas?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)

Yet in 2024, it was [revealed that a foreign agency ran spy operations out of GCSB for years without ministers knowing](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/512315/updates-foreign-agency-ran-spy-operation-out-of-gcsb-for-years?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz). [Edward Snowden](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five%5FEyes?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) warned that Five Eyes is a [“supra-national intelligence organisation that does not answer to known laws of its own countries.”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five%5FEyes?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) Under the Key government, [GCSB “dramatically expanded spying operations,”](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/snowden-revelations-the-price-of-the-five-eyes-club-mass-spying-on-friendly-nations/IIMOU3E4C6LSTHVQVVXRPSIVAM/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) [“automatically funnelling vast amounts of intelligence to US NSA.”](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/snowden-revelations-the-price-of-the-five-eyes-club-mass-spying-on-friendly-nations/IIMOU3E4C6LSTHVQVVXRPSIVAM/?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz)

In 2024, [academics called for an inquiry](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/527819/is-nz-intelligence-helping-israel-wage-war-in-gaza-lawyers-call-for-inquiry?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz) into whether NZSIS and GCSB were sharing intelligence used by Israel in Gaza. The [same risk now applies to Venezuela](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/583129/venezuela-attack-new-zealand-concerned-expects-everyone-to-follow-international-law-winston-peters?ref=themaorigreenlantern.maori.nz): if New Zealand intelligence contributed to Operation Absolute Resolve, Aotearoa is **complicit in war crimes**.

## **Luxon’s US Alignment: A Timeline of Capitulation**

The evidence of Luxon’s surrender is **overwhelming**:
