"The Coalition's Crumbling Foundation: Why Tanya Unkovich's Resignation Exposes David Seymour's Political Dead End" - 27 June 2025

Kia ora whānau - tēnā koutou katoa

Welcome to another dissection of Aotearoa's political theatre. Another day, another crack in the coalition government's facade, another symptom of a system rotting from within.

Tanya Unkovich's resignation from New Zealand First1 represents far more than one MP's career change. It signals the beginning of the end for a coalition government built on white supremacist foundations, neoliberal delusions, and the racist ambitions of David Seymour and his ACT Party accomplices.

While Unkovich cited serving better in the private sector as her reason for departure1, the timing speaks volumes about a government in crisis. This resignation comes as polling consistently shows the coalition losing ground2, with the left bloc now having enough support to form government. The coalition's numbers have dropped to a precarious 57 seats compared to the opposition's 632.

Background: The Toxic Trinity

To understand why Unkovich's departure matters, we must examine the putrid foundation upon which this coalition stands. The National-ACT-New Zealand First alliance represents a convergence of neoliberal economics, white supremacist politics, and populist nationalism3. At its heart sits David Seymour, a man who weaponises his own Māori whakapapa against his people while advancing policies that would make Don Brash blush.

The coalition agreement promised to restore "democracy" by dismantling co-governance arrangements4, eliminate race-based policies targeting Māori health inequities, and implement Seymour's racist Treaty Principles Bill. These policies represent a coordinated assault on tino rangatiratanga and te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Coalition Government in Crisis

Unkovich's resignation is merely the latest symptom of a government plagued by instability, declining public support, and internal contradictions. Recent polling shows ACT has suffered significant losses2, dropping 2.8 percentage points to just 6.6 percent - the largest decline among coalition parties. Meanwhile, Seymour faces mounting criticism for his online harassment campaign against academics and critics5 through his "Victim of the Day" social media posts.

This matters deeply to Māori because it exposes the fundamental weakness of those who would deny our rights and rewrite our history. When coalition partners start jumping ship, it reveals the inherent instability of governments built on division and hatred rather than genuine partnership and respect for tangata whenua.

The Hollow Man's Empty Policies

Seymour's political project represents the worst of neoliberal capitalism wrapped in the veneer of "equality." His campaign to end "division by race"6 is textbook white supremacist rhetoric that seeks to eliminate targeted support for Māori while maintaining the structural advantages enjoyed by Pākehā. This is not equality - it is the continuation of colonialism by other means.

The Treaty Principles Bill7, Seymour's signature policy, has been condemned by his own hapū as contradicting "the principles his ancestors fought for"8. When even your own iwi reject your kaupapa, perhaps it's time to reflect on whose interests you're truly serving. But Seymour, like all colonial collaborators, has chosen the approval of his Pākehā masters over the mana of his people.

His attacks on Māori health initiatives9 demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of equity. Claiming that targeted health programmes for Māori represent "racial discrimination" ignores the centuries of systemic racism that created these health disparities in the first place. This is classic neoliberal gaslighting - blame the victims for the violence done to them, then punish them for seeking redress.

Seymour's Online Bullying Campaign Exposes His True Character

Perhaps most revealing of Seymour's character is his recent campaign of online harassment against critics10. His "Victim of the Day" posts target academics, activists, and anyone who dares question his Regulatory Standards Bill. Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau rightly described this as harassment5 that "could incite behaviour that spills into real-world violence."

This behaviour follows the Trump playbook perfectly - attack critics personally, undermine academic freedom, and claim it's all "just a joke" when called out. Dame Anne Salmond correctly identified this as "Trumpian rhetoric"5 designed to intimidate university scholars and stifle dissent. For a man who claims to champion free speech, Seymour seems remarkably intolerant of anyone who disagrees with him.

The Mathematics of Political Collapse

The numbers don't lie, even when politicians do. ACT's support has plummeted2 while public trust in government has collapsed to just 45 percent11. A staggering 67 percent of New Zealanders now believe that government, business, and "the wealthy" actively disadvantage ordinary people11. This represents a fundamental crisis of legitimacy for the entire neoliberal project.

Unkovich's resignation comes at a particularly vulnerable time for the coalition. New Zealand First has invoked "agree to disagree" provisions12 on several issues, while tensions between coalition partners continue to mount13. The government's inability to deliver on its promises while maintaining internal cohesion exposes the fundamental contradictions at its heart.

Māori Values Versus Colonial Capitalism

The contrast between Māori values and Seymour's neoliberal ideology could not be starker. Where we value whakatōhea (collective responsibility), Seymour promotes individual competition. Where we practise manaakitanga (hospitality and care), he advocates for cutting support for the most vulnerable. Where we understand whakapapa (genealogical connections), he seeks to fragment our communities through "colour-blind" policies that ignore the ongoing impacts of colonisation.

Seymour's suggestion that diversity initiatives should be eliminated14 because people are "99.9% the same" reveals a profound ignorance of the role culture, history, and social context play in shaping life outcomes. This reductionist thinking is typical of neoliberal ideology - reduce everything to individual choice while ignoring structural barriers and systemic oppression.

Coalition Partners Fleeing a Sinking Ship

Unkovich's departure follows a pattern of instability that has plagued coalition governments worldwide when built on unstable foundations. Political scientists note that New Zealand voters have low tolerance for disunity and disorder15, unlike countries that have normalised political chaos.

The timing of her resignation - as David Seymour assumes the Deputy Prime Minister role16 - sends a clear message about confidence in the coalition's direction. When MPs start abandoning ship just as your key ally takes more responsibility, it suggests deep-seated problems with leadership and vision.

More resignations are likely as the coalition's popularity continues to decline and the contradictions between its three parties become increasingly difficult to manage. The government's targets remain largely unmet17, with four of nine key objectives either behind track or facing significant risks.

Implications: The Beginning of the End

Unkovich's resignation represents more than parliamentary arithmetic - it signals the beginning of the coalition's political death spiral. When governments lose MPs voluntarily, it typically indicates broader problems with morale, direction, and public support. The fact that she cited serving better in the private sector suggests a fundamental disconnect between political rhetoric and lived reality within the coalition.

For Māori, this instability creates both opportunities and risks. While a weakened coalition government means less capacity to implement anti-Māori policies, it also creates unpredictability that could lead to desperate political manoeuvres designed to shore up support among racist voters.

The broader implications for New Zealand's democracy are equally concerning. Trust in institutions continues to erode11, creating conditions where authoritarian populists like Seymour can gain influence by exploiting public frustration. This is the same playbook used by far-right movements worldwide - manufacture crisis, blame minorities, and promise simple solutions to complex problems.

Seymour's House of Cards Collapses

Tanya Unkovich's resignation exposes the fundamental hollowness of David Seymour's political project. Built on white supremacist foundations, advanced through online bullying, and justified by neoliberal economics that serve only the wealthy, ACT's agenda is crumbling under the weight of its own contradictions.

Seymour may have Māori whakapapa, but he has chosen to weaponise it against his own people in service of colonial capitalism. His policies would strip away the few protections Māori have won through decades of struggle while maintaining the structural advantages that benefit Pākehā. This is not equality - it is genocide by other means.

As coalition partners flee and public support evaporates, Seymour's mask is slipping. Behind the slick presentations and economic jargon lies the same old colonial violence, dressed up in the language of individual choice and market freedom. His house of cards is collapsing, and with it, the latest attempt to roll back the gains tangata whenua have made in reclaiming our rightful place in our own country.

The mathematics are clear - this coalition government is dying. The question is whether it will take our democracy down with it, or whether its collapse will create space for genuine partnership based on te Tiriti and respect for tino rangatiratanga.
