“The Epstein Photos: Network Exposure and Political Theatre on the Final Countdown” - 13 December 2025

The theatre of transparency is the mask of the beast

“The Epstein Photos: Network Exposure and Political Theatre on the Final Countdown” - 13 December 2025

Tēnā koutou katoa.

We are witnessing a masterclass in deflection. On Friday, the House Oversight Committee released 19 photographs from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, a tiny fraction of the 95,000 images currently held in congressional vaults. What has been presented to the public as a breakthrough for justice is, in reality, a curated exhibition of selective disclosure designed to protect the architecture of power while sacrificing a few pawns. This is not transparency; it is a controlled demolition of the truth.

Background: The Illusion of Discovery

To understand the significance of this release, we must look past the headlines. Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex trafficker who died in custody in 2019, built a network that implicated the highest echelons of global power. For years, the narrative has been contained—limited to “a few bad apples” like Prince Andrew or vague associations. But the existence of a cache of 95,000 photographs, now in the possession of the US Congress, threatens to blow that containment wide open.

However, instead of a full release, we are seeing a partisan weaponisation of the files. The Republican-led committee holds the full archive but has released nothing of substance. The Democrats, in a move to pressure the Trump administration, released just 19 images. As reported by RNZ, these photos show Trump, Bill Clinton, Steve Bannon, and Bill Gates, yet the faces of the women in them are redacted—ostensibly to protect victims, but effectively erasing the witnesses while the men’s reputations are debated in the press.

A Bipartisan Cover-Up

The core issue is not what the photos show, but what they conceal. The release of these images on 12 December 2025 comes just days before a court-ordered deadline for the Department of Justice to release its own files. The timing is not accidental. By trickling out selected images now, political actors are attempting to frame the narrative before the floodgates potentially open.

The photos confirm that Trump, Clinton, and Bannon were deeply embedded in Epstein’s social world, but they also reveal a terrifying reality:

the machinery of the state is being used to manage the fallout. The “transparency” we are being sold is a lie. Both parties are cherry-picking evidence to wound their opponents while ensuring the broader network—the one that connects finance, intelligence, and politics—remains hidden in the shadows.

Redacted documents symbolizing selective disclosure and hidden networks

The Architecture of Impunity

The Bannon-Epstein Intelligence Pipeline

The most explosive revelation isn’t just a photo; it’s the intelligence network behind it. Newly released emails reveal a deep, operational relationship between Epstein and Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist. As detailed by Byline Times, Epstein and Bannon exchanged hundreds of emails in 2018 and 2019, months after Epstein’s initial conviction. Epstein wasn’t just a donor; he was acting as an intelligence asset, relaying information to the White House “in real time.”

This connection goes beyond mere acquaintance. Epstein offered Bannon access to his home via a secret “rear entrance” to avoid surveillance, a fact that NBC News highlights as evidence of their need for absolute secrecy.

This wasn’t a social call;

it was a backchannel between a sex offender and the West Wing.

Trump’s Knowledge of “The Girls”

The narrative that Trump kicked Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago for bad behaviour is crumbling under the weight of his own associates’ words. In emails uncovered by the investigation, Epstein explicitly claimed that Trump “knew about the girls”, directly contradicting the White House’s denials. Further, Epstein alleged that Trump “spent hours” with the late Virginia Giuffre, one of the most prominent survivors of the ring.

This assertion is devastating. It suggests that the President of the United States was not just aware of the trafficking operation but was present with its victims. Yet, the White House Press Secretary continues to dismiss these emails as proving “absolutely nothing,” as reported by RNZ. This gaslighting is a hallmark of mauri-depleting leadership—denying reality even when it is written in black and white.

Elite networks and the question of who knew what about connections

The Institutional Rot: Larry Summers and Harvard

The network extends far beyond Mar-a-Lago. Larry Summers, the former Treasury Secretary and Harvard President, has been exposed for maintaining ties with Epstein well into the #MeToo era. CNN reports that Summers has now resigned from the OpenAI board and stepped back from Harvard after expressing “deep shame.”

But shame is not accountability. Summers’ fall reveals how deeply Epstein had penetrated the liberal establishment and academia. Axios notes that Summers continued to seek Epstein’s advice and funding long after his crimes were public knowledge. This is the neoliberal university system in action: morality is flexible as long as the cheques clear.

The Redaction Wars: Weaponising Privacy

The fight over these photos is a masterclass in political cynicism. Republicans accuse Democrats of “cherry-picking” photos to target Trump, while Democrats accuse the White House of a cover-up. RNZ’s analysis confirms that while Republicans hold the full 95,000-image set, they have released zero images themselves, choosing instead to attack the Democrats’ release.

Meanwhile, the faces of the women in these photos are redacted. While this ostensibly protects their privacy, it also conveniently renders them voiceless and faceless in the narrative. They become props in a political drama between powerful men. 1News highlights that not a single released photo depicts sexual misconduct, allowing defenders to claim these were just “social events.” The visual evidence of abuse is withheld, while the visual evidence of networking is weaponised.

Implications: The Cost of Silence

The harm caused by this cover-up is quantifiable and catastrophic. The late Virginia Giuffre, whose testimony was central to exposing this network, is now gone, yet her name is still being dragged through the mud by political operatives. The message to survivors is clear: your pain is only relevant if it can be used to score points against a political opponent.

For Māori, this resonates deeply. We know what it is like to have our trauma bureaucratised and our truth redacted by the state. The same systems that protect Epstein’s friends are the systems that deny colonial violence and suppress Indigenous sovereignty. When power protects itself in Washington, it reinforces the impunity of power everywhere, including here in Aotearoa.

Institutional barriers to justice

Cut the Network

We must not be distracted by the theatre. The release of 19 photos is a crumb thrown to a starving public. The real meal—the 95,000 photos, the flight logs, the financial records—is still being withheld.

We need to demand more than just photos. We need a full, unredacted accounting of the intelligence and financial networks that allowed Epstein to operate. We need to know who in New Zealand was connected to this web, because money and influence do not stop at borders.

The taiaha is drawn. We will not be satisfied with half-truths. Name the names. Release the files. Manaaki the survivors.
