Trump’s Ceasefire: Smoke, Mirrors, and the Machinery of Misinformation

In the wake of a supposed “ceasefire” between Israel and Iran, US President Donald Trump has once again shown his true colours as a manipulator of truth, spinning narratives that serve US and Israeli interests while ignoring the lived realities of those on the ground. This essay exposes how Trump’s ceasefire announcement was not only misleading, but actively contributed to confusion, escalation, and the perpetuation of violence. I will unpack the timeline, the rhetoric, and the far-right tactics at play, grounding my critique in Māori values of integrity, collective wellbeing, and truth-telling.

Background: The Machinery of Ceasefire Announcements
A ceasefire, in international relations, is a temporary stoppage of war where each side agrees to suspend aggressive actions. In the context of the Israel-Iran conflict, Trump’s announcement of a “complete and total ceasefire” was made after days of escalating violence, including missile attacks and airstrikes that killed civilians and targeted critical infrastructure1 2. Trump declared on social media that “the ceasefire is now in effect,” congratulating both sides and predicting an end to hostilities1 3. Yet, neither Iran nor Israel issued immediate official statements confirming the deal1.

From a Māori perspective, the significance of such announcements lies not only in the words spoken, but in the mana (authority, integrity) and pono (truthfulness) behind them. When leaders manipulate truth for political gain, they undermine the collective wellbeing (oranga) of all peoples affected by their actions.

The Web of Contradictions
Trump’s claim of a ceasefire was immediately contradicted by events on the ground. Even as he announced the truce, Iranian missiles struck Israel, killing civilians in Beersheba45 6. Israel retaliated with airstrikes on Tehran and other Iranian targets789. Iranian officials denied that a ceasefire had been reached, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating, “There is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations”10 11 12. Iranian state media echoed this denial, calling reports of post-ceasefire missile launches “false”13.

This matters deeply to Māori and all Indigenous peoples because it reveals how powerful actors weaponise language and media to obscure truth, justify violence, and maintain systems of colonial domination. The scope of this analysis covers the timeline of the ceasefire announcement, the media narratives, and the underlying power dynamics.

Dissecting the Deception

Trump’s Announcement: A Masterclass in Neoliberal Spin
Trump’s ceasefire declaration was less a diplomatic breakthrough than a public relations stunt. He boasted, “It has been fully agreed… there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE… at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!”1. Yet, on-the-ground reports showed continued missile launches and airstrikes, with both sides blaming each other for violations6 124. Trump’s rhetoric fits the neoliberal playbook: declare victory, shift blame, and move on, regardless of the human cost.

Media Complicity and the Manufacture of Confusion
Mainstream outlets like RNZ, CBS, and AP repeated Trump’s claims with little scrutiny, often presenting Israeli and US military statements as fact while relegating Iranian denials to the margins78 124. This reflects a colonial media bias that privileges Western and Israeli narratives, erasing the voices of those most affected by the violence. As CNN reported, “uncertainty looms over a ceasefire declared by US President Donald Trump, leaving questions about when or if it will be implemented”13. This ambiguity is not accidental—it is a tool of control.

Weaponising the Language of Peace
Trump’s framing of the ceasefire as a gift to the region, claiming “I believe the ceasefire is indefinite. It will last indefinitely”3, is a textbook example of white supremacist paternalism. He positions himself as the saviour, erasing the agency of Iranians, Israelis, and all those suffering under the bombs. This rhetoric mirrors colonial “peace-making” in Aotearoa, where treaties were signed with one hand while land was stolen with the other.

Hidden Connections: Imperial Interests and Far-Right Narratives
The timing and content of Trump’s announcement served US and Israeli strategic interests. By declaring a ceasefire, Trump sought to claim credit for “ending” a war while giving Israel cover to continue its operations under the guise of responding to “violations”8912. Israeli leaders, for their part, thanked Trump and the US for their support in “eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat” and warned they would “respond forcefully to any violation of the ceasefire”89. This is classic far-right fear-mongering: paint the enemy as irrational aggressors, justify disproportionate force, and claim moral high ground.

Counterarguments and Their Collapse
Some might argue that Trump’s efforts, however flawed, were a genuine attempt at peacemaking. But the facts speak for themselves: violence continued unabated, civilians died, and both Iranian and Israeli officials disputed the existence or terms of the ceasefire10 11 12 13. Trump’s announcement was not a step toward peace, but a cynical ploy to control the narrative and deflect responsibility.

Implications: The Cost of Misinformation
The broader implications are stark. Trump’s lies and the media’s complicity fuel cycles of violence, mistrust, and trauma. For Māori and other Indigenous peoples, this is a reminder of how colonial powers use misinformation to justify war, dispossession, and the suppression of dissent. The manipulation of ceasefire language mirrors the broken promises of Te Tiriti o Waitangi—words of peace masking acts of aggression.

Truth, Mana, and the Call to Action
Trump’s ceasefire announcement was a lie—an act of political theatre that obscured ongoing violence and enabled further bloodshed. The media’s failure to challenge this narrative reveals deep-seated colonial biases that continue to shape global politics. As Māori, we are called to uphold mana, speak truth to power, and demand accountability from those who wield violence in our name.
