"Trump's ICE" - 30 August 2025

He Is Building America's Securitate

"Trump's ICE" - 30 August 2025

Kia ora tatou katoa - Greetings to us all.

As Māori, we understand the trauma of surveillance states and the weaponisation of bureaucracy against Indigenous peoples. What unfolds before us in Trump's America bears disturbing parallels to Nicolae Ceaușescu's Romania - a systematic transformation of immigration enforcement into something far more sinister: a domestic secret police force designed to terrorise communities into submission.

Trump Is The Wannabe Emperor Of TrumpLand

Background

The Romanian Securitate operated as one of history's most brutal secret police forces, infiltrating every aspect of society to maintain Ceaușescu's iron grip on power. Under Ceaușescu's 25-year rule, Romania transformed from a relatively prosperous nation into an oppressive surveillance state where citizens lived in constant fear of arbitrary detention and deportation to labour camps.

For tangata whenua, this resonates deeply. We have witnessed how colonial governments use bureaucratic systems to control, surveil, and punish Indigenous peoples who refuse to assimilate. The parallels between historical colonial enforcement mechanisms and modern immigration enforcement are not coincidental - they emerge from the same white supremacist playbook of population control.

Trump Is Creating His Secret Police

The Issue at Hand

Trump's administration has embarked on an unprecedented expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Congress approving $45 billion for building new detention centers and $14 billion for deportation operations. This represents the largest federal investment in domestic enforcement infrastructure in American history, potentially doubling detention capacity from 56,000 to over 100,000 beds.

But this is not merely about immigration enforcement. The tactics employed - masked agents operating from unmarked vehicles, conducting public arrests that witnesses describe as "abductions," and the deployment of military forces against protesters - mirror the Securitate's methods of social control.

The Securitate Playbook in Action

The Romanian secret police perfected several tactics that we now observe in ICE operations:

Masked Identity Concealment: Romanian secret police operatives routinely concealed their identities to prevent accountability and create psychological terror. Today, ICE agents wear masks and operate from unmarked vehicles, making it impossible for communities to identify or hold accountable those conducting raids.

Public Spectacle of Power: Ceaușescu's regime understood that visible brutality serves as social control. ICE's increasingly public arrests during daylight hours, particularly in major urban areas, mirror this strategy. The administration wants communities to witness these arrests as a deterrent - exactly as the Securitate operated.

Expansion Beyond Original Mandate: The Securitate began as border security but expanded into comprehensive social control. Similarly, ICE has evolved from immigration enforcement into a domestic police force that now represents the largest federal law enforcement agency, operating with military-grade equipment and tactics.

Administrative Disappearance: The Trump administration has begun listing thousands of immigrants as "dead" in government databases, cutting off their access to employment, benefits, and banking - a form of civil death that echoes Securitate methods of erasing dissidents from official records.

This Is Trumps Plan To Control The American People

Military Deployment Against Civilians

Perhaps most alarming is Trump's deployment of National Guard forces against protesters in Los Angeles, describing nonviolent demonstrations as "a form of rebellion against the authority of the government". This language - rebellion, insurrection, enemies of the state - directly parallels Ceaușescu's justifications for deploying security forces against civilians.

The targeting of journalists covering protests, including Australian reporter Lauren Tomasi who was shot with rubber bullets during a live broadcast, demonstrates the administration's intent to control information flow - another hallmark of authoritarian regimes.

We Can Resist, We Can Beat Trump, And We Will Win

The Infrastructure of Oppression

The scale of detention infrastructure being constructed reveals intentions beyond immigration enforcement. Private prison companies like CoreCivic have reported unprecedented demand, with nearly 90% of ICE detainees held in for-profit facilities. This mirrors Romania's gulag system, where political prisoners were held in conditions designed to break spirits and extract compliance.

New "soft-sided facilities" are being constructed on military bases, including Fort Bliss in Texas and planned facilities in Indiana and New Jersey. The euphemistic language - "soft-sided facilities" instead of concentration camps - echoes the bureaucratic doublespeak that characterised totalitarian regimes.

Community Terror and Resistance

The psychological impact on communities mirrors the Securitate's reign of terror. Families line up at detention centers with no confirmation their relatives are inside, while reports emerge of detainees drinking from toilets due to inhumane conditions.

Yet resistance emerges, as it did in Romania. Los Angeles protesters have covered federal buildings with graffiti reading "f*** ICE", while communities organise to protect vulnerable members. This resistance threatens the administration's control, explaining the increasingly militarised response.

We Must Resist, For The Love Of Our Whānau

Broader Implications

From a Māori perspective, this represents the latest evolution of settler colonial control mechanisms. Just as colonial governments used bureaucratic systems to dispossess Indigenous peoples, Trump's ICE apparatus serves to terrorise communities that challenge white supremacist power structures.

The funding levels - $170 billion for border and immigration enforcement - exceed many nations' entire budgets. This investment in domestic control infrastructure will persist beyond Trump's presidency, creating permanent mechanisms for authoritarian governance.

The targeting of "sanctuary cities" through federal funding cuts demonstrates how economic warfare complements physical enforcement - another Securitate tactic adapted for the American context.

We Will Resist, We Will Win

The comparison between Trump's ICE and Ceaușescu's Securitate is not hyperbole - it represents a conscious adaptation of proven authoritarian methods to American conditions. The massive funding increases, militarised tactics, identity concealment, and expansion beyond immigration enforcement reveal an infrastructure designed for comprehensive social control.

As tangata whenua, we recognise these patterns because we have survived them. The same colonial logic that justified our dispossession now justifies the creation of America's secret police. We must name this system for what it is: not immigration enforcement, but the construction of a domestic Securitate designed to terrorise communities into submission.

The question is not whether this represents authoritarian overreach - the evidence is overwhelming. The question is whether Americans will recognise the threat before their democracy joins Ceaușescu's Romania in history's graveyard of failed states.
