“The Future of America” - 5 November 2025
How Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Victory Proves Everyday Americans Are Fighting Back Against Trump’s Fascist Assault
Kia ora whānau. I am Ivor Jones, kaitiaki of Te Arawa/Ngāti Pikiao. On November 5, 2025, history turned. Zohran Mamdani—34 years old, Muslim, democratic socialist, son of immigrants—was elected Mayor of New York City, defeating a billionaire-backed establishment in the largest city in America. This is not just a mayoral race. This is the future of American democracy fighting back against Trump’s authoritarian state.

The Power: What This Victory Means
Mamdani’s election represents the most powerful rebuke of Trumpism since 2024. He will govern 8.5 million people with a $115 billion budget and over 300,000 city employees—making him the leader of the economic and cultural capital of global capitalism.
He is the first Muslim mayor in NYC history. The first South Asian to lead the city. The first person born in Africa to govern America’s largest metropolis. And at 34, the youngest mayor in over a century.
But the real power is this: Mamdani beat a billionaire-backed machine. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo—supported by $25 million from Wall Street billionaires including Bill Ackman and Michael Bloomberg, endorsed by Donald Trump himself, and given blanket support by conservative media—lost by 9 percentage points to a grassroots campaign.
Trump called Mamdani a “Jew hater” and threatened to “arrest and deport” him if he won. Billionaires spent $40 million on attack ads. The New York Post, New York Times, and establishment media ran constant hit pieces. Even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refused to endorse him.
Mamdani won anyway. This is what power looks like.
The Movement: 100,000 Volunteers, 3 Million Doors
Mamdani’s victory was not individual—it was collective. The NYC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) mobilized 100,000 volunteers who knocked on 3 million doors and made 3.3 million phone calls.
This is the largest grassroots mobilization in NYC history. By comparison, Cuomo’s campaign relied on paid canvassers—many of whom were caught on video endorsing Mamdani instead.
Turnout was historic: over 2 million ballots cast—the highest turnout in a mayoral election since 1969. Young people, Muslims, South Asians, renters, and working-class New Yorkers flooded polling stations.
As 22-year-old organizer Sreenivasan told ABC: “Zohran Mamdani represents the spark of a movement. Young people can create change.”
The Platform: Why Everyday Americans Chose Mamdani
Mamdani ran on affordability and collective provision—the opposite of Trump’s billionaire tax cuts and austerity. Free Buses with a 30% ridership increase in the NYC pilot program and 30% fewer assaults on transit workers prove public services work when funded. A Rent Freeze for 1 million rent-stabilized apartments stops displacement of working families. Universal Childcare addresses the fact that more than 80% of NYC families cannot afford daycare, funded by taxing the wealthy. City-Run Grocery Stores combat food price inflation by removing profit-seeking middlemen through direct public provision. A $30 Minimum Wage by 2030 ensures dignity and purchasing power for working people. Building 200,000 Affordable Housing Units over 10 years, funded by taxing corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
On Palestinian Solidarity, Mamdani accused Israel of genocide, pledged to honor ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu, and organized hunger strikes demanding cease-fires—directly contradicting the Democratic establishment’s uncritical support for Israeli apartheid.
This platform is not radical—it is responsive to what working people need. As Reverend Rashad Moore of Crown Heights stated: “I will take a mayor with less experience and more integrity than less integrity and more experience.”
November 5, 2025: The Night America Fought Back
Mamdani’s victory was not isolated. On the same night, Democrats swept every major election, delivering the strongest rebuke of Trump’s second term. In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Trump-aligned Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to become Virginia’s first female governor. Virginia has the second-largest federal workforce in America after California. Spanberger ran explicitly against Trump’s federal layoffs of 200,000 workers and vowed to “stand up” for them, winning by a commanding margin.
In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot, defeated Trump-backed Republican Jack Ciattarelli by 13 percentage points. Trump froze funding for the Hudson Tunnel project, and Sherrill made this betrayal central to her campaign, winning decisively.
In California, voters approved Proposition 50, allowing redistricting to counter Trump’s gerrymandering in Texas, adding up to 5 additional Democratic congressional seats and blocking Trump’s attempt to entrench Republican control of Congress. In Pennsylvania, three Democratic justices retained their seats on the state Supreme Court, blocking Republican attempts to manipulate election law. In Georgia, Democrats unseated two Republican members of the statewide Public Service Commission—a stunning upset in a deep-red state.
As New York Magazine’s Ed Kilgore wrote: “Democrats Have Undone Trump’s Magic.”

Material Hardship Rates Among Tamariki (Children) in Aotearoa New Zealand, 2024. Tamariki Māori experience material hardship at nearly double the rate of their Pākehā peers.
Exit polls show that young voters, Latino voters, Asian voters, and Black voters—the demographics Trump claimed in 2024—are now fleeing the GOP in response to his authoritarian government shutdown, mass layoffs, and Christian nationalist agenda. In Virginia, Spanberger won 67% of voters under 30, 64% of Latino voters, 67% of Asian voters, and 90% of Black voters. In New Jersey, Sherrill won over 60% of under-30 voters, Latinos by 2-to-1, Black voters by over 10-to-1, and Asian Americans by more than 4-to-1, including 90% of Black men and 57% of Latino men.
Republican operative Vivek Ramaswamy admitted: “We got our asses handed to us.” Even Trump’s former campaign manager Chris LaCivita called the GOP losses “a disaster”.
The Fascist State: What Mamdani is Fighting
Trump’s second term is not governance—it is dismantling democracy. On November 3, 2025, the US government shutdown entered its 35th day—tying the record for the longest in history. Trump is using the shutdown to implement Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s 900-page blueprint to concentrate presidential power.
Russell Vought—a Project 2025 architect confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 to head the Office of Management and Budget—now controls every dollar federal agencies spend. Vought is a Christian nationalist who believes Christianity should “fundamentally influence” all government. He drafted 350 executive orders for Trump’s second term and is implementing Schedule F—mass purges of federal workers, replacing merit-based civil servants with political loyalists.
In secretly recorded interviews, Vought said the goal is to make federal employees “traumatically affected” so they “don’t want to go to work.” 200,000 federal workers have been laid off before the shutdown even began. The EPA, public health agencies, and environmental protections are being systematically destroyed.
Elon Musk runs the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE)—an unelected, unaccountable body making federal budget decisions to benefit billionaires and corporations. Project 2025 wanted to “hobble the federal workforce”—DOGE has done exactly that. This is fascism: oligarchic control masquerading as efficiency, authoritarian purges of democratic institutions, and Christian nationalist ideology imposed on secular government.

Billionaire Wealth Networks Funding Project 2025 (2020-2024). Ultra-wealthy families invested over $123 million USD to reshape American federal government policy and Christian nationalism, with international influence.
Mamdani vs. Trump: The Direct Confrontation
Trump has made Mamdani a national target. The president posted on Truth Social that “Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!”—a blatant lie designed to incite violence. Trump threatened to cut federal funding to NYC if Mamdani won and has repeatedly threatened to deploy the National Guard against the city. Congressional Republicans are pushing to deport Mamdani—despite him being a naturalized US citizen since 2018.
This is moral clarity. This is courage. This is what resistance looks like.
The Signal to the World: Ordinary People Can Win
Mamdani’s victory—and the Democratic sweep on November 5—proves that Trump’s 2024 “mandate” was a mirage. One year after Trump declared a MAGA realignment, voters are fleeing the GOP in response to authoritarianism, economic betrayal, and Christian nationalism.
The Future: Why Mamdani Represents Hope
At 34, Mamdani is the youngest NYC mayor in over a century. He governs the economic capital of global capitalism with a mandate to implement democratic socialism: public ownership, progressive taxation, and collective provision.
If Mamdani succeeds—proving that free buses increase ridership, universal childcare enables parents to work, city-run grocery stores lower food costs, and taxing the wealthy funds thriving communities—he will demonstrate to the world that capitalism is not inevitable and neoliberalism is not natural.
As DSA national co-chair Ashik Siddique stated: “This election proves that democratic socialist ideas are very popular. We hope this is demonstrating a very powerful way forward.” Political scientist Costas Panagopoulos noted that Mamdani “galvanized support from disaffected voters and others who are dissatisfied with the status quo and with an establishment that they perceive to be overlooking their needs.”
This is the future of American politics: young, diverse, socialist, internationalist, and unafraid. Zohran Mamdani’s election is the most significant progressive victory since Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign. He defeated billionaires, Trump, conservative media, and the Democratic establishment because 100,000 ordinary people organized. On November 5, 2025, Americans fought back against Trump’s fascist state—and won.
The question is not whether we can win. Mamdani proves we can. The question is whether we will organize with the same intensity, moral clarity, and collective power. We must organize to take it.
